How To Be Genuinely Good At Receiving Things
Share
Everybody worries about being good at giving gifts. Almost nobody considers whether they are good at receiving them, and the second skill is rarer and arguably more useful.
The Bad Receiver, Described With Love
You know at least one. Possibly you are one. The tells are consistent.
- "Oh, you shouldn't have." Said in a way that suggests you genuinely should not have.
- Immediately mentions what it must have cost.
- Announces a plan to return or exchange it within roughly nine seconds.
- Sets it aside unopened to be dealt with later, privately.
None of these people are ungrateful. Most of them are uncomfortable being given things, which is a completely different problem.
What The Giver Is Actually Waiting For
Here is the thing worth understanding. The giver has already had their pleasure from choosing it.
What they are waiting for now is the two seconds of your face. That is the entire remaining reward, and a good receiver knows to give it properly.
It costs nothing and it is the whole transaction.
The Method
This is genuinely learnable, and four things cover almost all of it.
- Open it in front of them. Always. Setting it aside removes the only part they were waiting for.
- React before you evaluate. Your first sound should arrive before your assessment does.
- Name something specific. "I love the colour" beats "thank you so much" by a wide margin, because it proves you actually looked.
- Do not mention money, ever. Not the cost, not that they should not have spent it. It converts a gift into a debt.
When You Genuinely Do Not Like It
It happens, and pretending otherwise is not the answer either.
Find the true thing and say that. Somebody chose it, spent something, and thought about you while doing it ~ all of that is real regardless of the object. "You thought of me" is always true and never sounds hollow.
Then wear it once. Genuinely. Quite a lot of things are better on than they look in a box, and you will occasionally be surprised.
Why This Matters More Than It Seems
People give gifts to those who receive them well. That is not manipulation, it is simply how enjoyment works.
Be somebody it is fun to surprise, and you will find yourself surprised considerably more often.
