The Quiet Confidence Of Not Explaining Yourself
Share
There is a particular kind of person who does not explain their choices, and it is worth noticing how differently they are treated.
They are not secretive or difficult. They have simply stopped narrating.
The Habit Of Pre-Justifying
Most of us do this constantly without noticing.
You wear something slightly unusual and mention that it was a gift. You order something unexpected and explain that you are trying something new. You show up with a haircut and get in front of it before anybody comments.
Every one of those is a small apology for a decision that needed no apology.
What The Explaining Actually Communicates
Here is the awkward part. Pre-justifying a choice signals that you are not sure about it.
Nobody had asked. There was no objection to answer. By answering anyway, you introduced the possibility that there was something to answer for, which nobody had considered until you raised it.
The explanation creates the doubt rather than resolving it.
The Alternative Is Simply Silence
Wear the thing. Say nothing about it. Let it be a decision you made rather than a case you are arguing.
If somebody genuinely asks, "I liked it" is a complete and sufficient answer. It is remarkable how rarely anybody needs more than that, and how completely satisfied they are by it.
Why This Reads As Confidence
Because confidence is not certainty, it is the absence of a request for approval.
Somebody who explains is implicitly asking whether it was acceptable. Somebody who does not has not put the question on the table, and everybody around them takes the cue from that.
It is one of the few things in life where doing less is genuinely more effective.
Where To Practise It
Start with something small and low stakes.
- Wear the unusual thing without mentioning where it came from.
- Order what you want without characterising it as unusual for you.
- Resist filling a small silence with a justification nobody requested.
Let Some Things Be Unexplained
Not everything you choose needs a reason available on request. A choice can simply be a choice.
Keeping a little back is not evasiveness. It is just declining to submit every decision for review, and it is considerably more comfortable than the alternative once you get used to it.
