The Shirt You Reach For Without Thinking

Open your wardrobe and be honest about it. There are things in there you wear constantly, and there are things you have owned for two years and worn twice.

The interesting question is what separates them, because it is almost never what people assume.

It Is Not Quality And It Is Not Price

Everybody has an expensive item they never wear and a cheap one that has survived a decade of constant use.

So cost is not the variable. Neither is how much you liked it in the shop, which is a genuinely poor predictor of anything.

The Actual Test

Watch what happens when you get dressed while thinking about something else.

The things you reach for automatically are the ones that require no decision. You do not have to consider whether they work today, whether they suit your mood, or what they signal. They are simply available.

The things you never wear all require a small decision, and on a normal morning you do not have one spare.

Why The Never-Worn Things Fail

Usually one of four reasons, and they are worth recognising.

  • It needs an occasion. The occasion does not arrive often enough to build a habit.
  • It needs the rest of an outfit. Anything requiring three other correct items is effectively unavailable.
  • It is slightly uncomfortable. You noticed once and your body remembered permanently.
  • It is not quite you. Not wrong. Just requiring a small performance, and nobody performs on a Tuesday.

The Surprising Part

Here is what you find when you actually audit it. The favourites are frequently the ones you did not choose.

Something given to you, something you took a chance on, something you would have walked past. It got worn once because it was there, turned out to need no decision, and quietly became the default.

Whereas the carefully chosen item came with expectations attached, and expectations are exactly what makes a thing need a decision.

What To Do With This

Two things, both small.

First, wear the never-worn item on an ordinary day rather than saving it for a good one. Half the time that solves it entirely.

Second, notice which things you reach for automatically and stop assuming you know why. The pattern is usually more interesting than your theory about your own taste.
